Ewals

Crossroad helps Ewals in the way they provide transporting services by pushing the collaboration and interaction with their customers and partners

The Technology

Liferay portal is an open source enterprise portal with features commonly required for the development of websites and portals. Liferay includes a built-in web content management system to build websites and portals as an assembly of themes, pages, gadgets and a common navigation.

Business Process Management Suites like OpenText (Cordys) are a collection of tools to support the implementation of BPM initiatives. The goal is to bridge organizational and technological silo’s. Business process automation is achieved through executable process models and integration capabilities. Moreover, BPMS platforms contain functionality to monitor these end-to-end processes.

Challenge

Ewals Cargo Care was looking for a way to open up consignment information more transparently to their external stakeholders (both customers and partners, such as trucking companies). Ewals Cargo care even wanted to go one step further: external stakeholders needed to be able to interact with the Ewals system and so become part of the internal processes. The advantage would be a more structured, less manual and more reliable communication between stakeholders and a better overview for all parties involved.

Approach

Crossroad started with mapping the existing processes and available data together with the Ewals teams. The next step was designing the architecture to connect all the back end systems and defining the web services together with end-users (customers, sub-contractors and internal Ewals users). After the design was signed-off, the Crossroad team was responsible for the implementation, using a combination of Liferay and OpenText (Cordys) technologies.

Results

The integration of all back end systems in OpenText (Cordys), made it possible for all stakeholders to consult their own portal with Ewals Cargo Care data, which was built according to the stakeholder’s input and requirements.

  • Customers of Ewals can log-in to get an overview of their orders, which goods are in what consignment, status of planned transports and estimated time of arrivals.
  • Partners (e.g. trucking companies) can get an overview of the transports they are assigned to, they can accept consignments and enrich it with extra information (e.g. number of the used trailer). This information is then passed directly into the Cordys back end.
  • Ewals employees can use the portal to create new orders and Cordys ensures all the necessary back end systems get the information they need.
